Judge Mel Maurer was first appointed a magistrate for Richland County in 1982. Prior to appointment as magistrate, Judge Maurer worked in private business, real estate brokerage and state government. He served terms on the town council and as mayor for Blythewood in Richland County. He received his B.A. degree in Business from Georgia Southern University and his M.B.A. from the University of South Carolina. In 1993 he received one of twenty-five scholarships nationally for Special Court Judges to the Legal Institute taught at the National Judicial College. Judge Maurer appeared in a segment of the S.C. Victims Assistance Network's video for victims of crimes giving an overview of Summary Court responsibilities to victims. He also appeared as a panelist in the S.C. ETV broadcast concerning the implementation of the victims' rights legislation in 1996.

The Directors of the Domestic Abuse Center in Columbia presented Judge Maurer the 1999 Walter Smith Award, which recognizes work in supporting the growth of that service. The National Judicial College awarded him a tuition grant to the November 2000 Domestic Violence school in Nashville, TN. During his tenure Judge Maurer has presented information to civic organizations and other magistrates and municipal judges. In addition to other offices and duties, Maurer was elected President of the South Carolina Summary Court Judges Association for the September 2000 to September 2002 term. Previously he served as First Vice President, Treasurer, Legislative Liaison and Education Chairman for the judge's organization.


Judge Maurer has also been a municipal judge for the town of Irmo since 2006.
